Legend of Kuldhara
The history goes back to the 18th century when Kuldhara was
inhabited by the successful Paliwal Brahmins, a very well-respected clan famous
for their wisdom and farming skills. The village prospered under their hands
until one evening when they vanished into thin air.
Legend has it that Salim Singh, the ruthless and powerful
Prime Minister of Jaisalmer, set his eyes on the lovely daughter of the village
chief. He wanted her for himself and warned of terrible retribution if she was
not handed over to him. Terrified of his fury, the Paliwals took a collective
decision—instead of succumbing to his tyranny, they would leave behind their
cherished village.
But before they departed, they placed a curse on the land,
stating that no human would ever be able to inhabit Kuldhara again. To this
day, despite several attempts, the village remains unoccupied.
Tourists who brave Kuldhara at night describe spine-tingling
experiences. Unusual sounds, whispering sounds, and sudden cold spells are the
order of the day. Some report witnessing dark figures moving among the ruins,
while others describe the creepy experience of being observed.
Paranormal researchers have explored Kuldhara, employing
sophisticated devices to scan for paranormal activity. Some have documented
strange patterns of energy, and others have caught chilling voices ringing
through the empty lanes.
Although skeptics criticize that the abandonment of Kuldhara
was a result of disappearing water resources or overburdensome taxation, the
enigma of never being able to occupy the place lingers. The unexplainable
feelings and creepy quietness that shroud the village persist in adding to its
haunted fame.
In spite of its haunted history, Kuldhara is now a popular
tourist destination, attracting curious tourists and adventure-seekers. The
government of Rajasthan has even tried to restore some of the village to
maintain its historical importance.
